[audio]Bertha Lee w. Charley Patton-Yellow Bee - Bertha Lee w. Charley Patton
Recorded on January 31, 1934 in New York City. This tune was originally made popular by Memphis Minnie. The tune is clearly sexual in nature, and from Patton's asides during the tune, it appears that Patton is certainly enjoying Lee's come on. It is thought that Patton and Lee recorded several other tunes during this last recording session. See the notes to "Mind Reader Blues." However, if they did, they are lost and haven't been heard...by anyone still alive that is...

[audio]Ernest Rodgers-Willie The Chimney Sweeper - Ernest Rodgers
Recorded in 1927. This same tune was recorded at about the same time by Frankie "Half Pint" Jaxon, well known at the time for his tunes full of innuendo (not to mention his parallel career as a female impersonator), as "Willie The Weeper." These tunes may be the earliest known "reefer" tunes in American popular culture (with the exception of "La Cucaracha"). The references to "smoking pills" in these "Willie" tunes isn't that strange when it is taken into consideration that drug vernacular at th...

[audio]Excellent Condition From Goodwill
I found this album of 78's at the Goodwill on 7-30-2014, in excellent condition.  They didn't even need to be cleaned.  These are dubbed from a Dual 1009 turntable with a Shure cartridge and 78 RPM needle.  Run through a standard magnetic equalizer (part of my Pioneer SX-550) and a Radio Shack graphic equalizer with 8kHz and above and 31Hz suppressed to -12 dB, 62, 125 and 4kHz flat, and 250 to 1 kHz ramped up to +8, and 2 kHz at +4.  It wasn't the Estudiantina Trio, but Santiago Waltz final...

[audio]Over There - Enrico Caruso
This spirited recording by Caruso has been a delight to listeners for over 80 years. Over there, was the American call to arms and was sung in the largest cities to the tinniest hamlets throughout the country. The Yankee Doodle Dandy himself, George M. Cohan, wrote it. Caruso, who knew Cohan, loved the song. He recorded the song at the Victor studios in Camden, New Jersey in the summer of 1918. Caruso sang this song at Liberty Bond Rallies around the Country, and even at the Metropolitan Opera H...

[audio]Dwyer's Favorite, The Star of Munster - Paddy Killoran
Fiddle solo, unknown - piano, Decca 12158. Tom Ennis recorded Dwyer's as Eileen Curran, in the key of A minor; this recording is also on this site. Playing in A requires going up to high C, not impossible on the fiddle but tricky, so fiddle settings are in G minor instead, such as the one in O'Neill's, under the title the Sailor's Return. The label for this record actually listed the second tune as the "Star of Monster." Like the first tune it is more commonly heard in A minor...

Irish bagpipes solo, with Alex Brown, piano, Columbia 33558-F, also released in England. The great Sligo fiddler Michael Coleman recorded this setting of this reel in 1944, on a disc for radio broadcast. Another setting, more suited to the fiddle, is now played, under the strange corrupted title "Graf Spee" - a WWI German battleship. The title here itself is a corruption of the original "Sir Arthur Grant's Strathspey." Beirne also recorded with his "Irish Blackbirds Orchestra," and made a furthe...
